Repairs and Restorations
A
large part of the Eastcoast Canoe Company's work involves canoe repair
and restoration of wood and canvas canoes. These repairs may be
as straight forward as replacing a worn-out canvas to repairing
and replacing broken ribs, planking, stems, or any other wooden
members. When repairs are completed all canoes are treated with
oils and preservatives to produce a flexible and durable hull.
In addition the oil treatment of wooden parts greatly reduces
the absorption of water.
Re-canvasing includes the
removal of old canvas, tightening or replacing loose tacks, sanding
of the hull, applying a coat of boiled linseed oil, instalation
of new canvas and filler, and reinstalling the original gunwales.
At Eastcoast Canoes we apply three to four coats of marine grade
enamel and then reinstall original stem bands where possible.
The interior is cleaned and sanded and a coat of marine grade
spar varnish is then applied. The cost of re-canvasing a canoe
is $600.00.
Other repairs will require an inspection at our shop to give an
accurate estimate. Prices may change once your canoe is taken
apart and its true condition can be determined.
